Hi all!
Here we are in Week 4! Can’t believe we are already a quarter of the way through our summer growing season! As the season progresses, we are going to begin sending these email updates later in the week (Thursday or Friday) as we settle into a rhythm of planting and cultivating Monday-Wednesday, and harvesting Thursday-Friday. This way we can share the most up-to-date info with you as the produce literally comes in fresh out of the fields!
Storm clouds roll in, bringing welcome rain and a break from this week’s intense heat
Our early spring crops are beginning to transition over to staple summer produce, and it’s so fun seeing everything grow and ripen in the fields. Here is what you can expect in your CSA box this week, as well as some extras we’ll be taking to the Iowa City Farmer’s Market this weekend!
Chinese Cabbage
Red Romaine
Red Baby Leaf Lettuce
Cilantro * new this week
Summer Squash
Cucumber
Sugar Snap Peas
Pac Choi *new this week
Beets *new this week
Lots of Golden and Red Beets harvested this week!
We’ll also be bringing a few extras to market this week:
All-Star Lettuce
Arugula
Spinach
Country Mix Greens Blend
Carrot
The FIRST TOMATO of the season ripens in our high tunnel - this means cherry and slicing tomatoes should be hitting your boxes in just a few weeks!
For this week’s recipe, I’m going to send you over to a chocolate zucchini bread recipe that we love here in our family! I am not a skilled baker, so instead of clumsily trying to reinvent the wheel, I’d rather send you to the pros :) The recipe can be found HERE, and features gluten-free, dairy-free options to accommodate special dietary needs for family and friends. Trust me when I say this recipe is a winner! A perfect dessert to bring along to a July 4th picnic!
And finally, with next week’s Fourth of July Holiday falling on Friday, we will offer some extra accommodations for CSA pickup options - stay tuned for an email EARLY NEXT WEEK to discuss days, times, and locations for the pickup over the Holiday Weekend!
From our family to yours,
Beth and Tyler
